Miami to Key Largo Race, April 23 & 24 Tom Mestrits
This is a classic race 66th annual event starting inside Biscayne Bay at marker G 71 following the Inter Coastal trough the Featherbed Banks channel, Cutter Banks, Card Sound, Barnes Sound and the finish is at the entrance of Jewfish Creek. There is one bridge at between Card Sound with a clearance of 65 ft. In total it is around 40 miles and passing through channels with shoals each side and the Card Sound bridge. You can use your engine through these areas but can not pass any boats under power.
The race starts at 8:00 in the morning with a huge starting line. The race committee boat is in the middle of the sating line, one side is all the Monohulls and the other side is all the Multihulls. The race record is held by Bill Roberts with his 30ft catamaran Dream On with the time of 1hr 43 min. Unfortunately, Bill is not with us anymore, but his son Eric will be sailing. They placed first over all more than two dozen times.
There is a race back to Miami, but I am planning to stay in the Keys and do some snorkeling and fishing.
